Bio
My name is Simon Hipgrave and I am creative. If you were to narrow that title down further, you could call me an art director, graphic designer, print maker, artist, writer, illustrator, daydreamer. Whichever way you slice it though, at the core of everything are the ideas.
For the past 7 years in my career I have been bouncing ideas, big and small off other people and trying to execute them as beautifully as possible. Ever since my first role out of university designing annual reports, through to my five years in advertising I have always worked hard to develop concepts that resonate with their own voices.
Good ideas are never conceived alone, nor are they executed well in a vacuum. People, partnerships and collaboration are essential. I fought my way into a role at Junior, not for money, title or prestige, but because I believed they had the best team of people in Brisbane. People who I could learn from and grow with. At Junior, I did just that while also managing other creatives: working with directors, photographers, illustrators, 3D and web designers in my role as an art director.
I spent almost a solid year working privately after hours on daily experiments as part of my Operation: Everyday project, but it was not until I started collaborating with my wife that my extra-curricular activities really start to click. In December 2010 we started The Hungry Workshop, a letterpress studio and creative outlet for our collaborations. It is here that I’ve rekindled my belief in simple executions, which create more room for the core idea.
I am now in the process of relocating to Melbourne where I hope to connect with more like-minded creatives and bring more ideas to life.
